- On delivery of Premium Content, the crew on board ship are notified of the receipt
and are then invited to activate the content for a fee. Once activated, the content
is available for the crew to enjoy for a specified period after which, the content
is deactivated and deleted.
- The Pay Per Download feature is distinct from Video On Demand (VOD) in that Pay
Per Download operates within SatstreamNet’s wholesale environment rather than at
a retail level. SatstreamNet distributors are offered one or more pre-defined Premium
Content packages to market to their end customers.
- Then the end customer selects one or more of the Premium Content packages offered
by their distributor at prices set by the distributor. Each Premium Content package
contains a set of files which are transmitted by SatstreamNet, using Multicast IP,
to the end customers that have signed up for these packages.
- When a Premium Content file is delivered, the end customer is notified of the delivery
by the Media Gateway “Message” facility which is part of the media player. The message
invites the end customer to activate the content using a specific Activation Key
which is unique to the end customer: the content is not available to play until
activation occurs.
- Because the Pay Per Download feature is included in the wholesale environment of
SatstreamNet, the distributor is invoiced and not the end customer. When an end
customer activates the delivered Premium Content, the identity of the customer activating
the content is made available to the distributor which is then able to bill the
end customer at the agreed price.
