The IP Multicast Delivery Platform For The Mobile Satellite Industry. With SatstreamNet, our aim is to provide a low cost content delivery service with a select number of airtime partners that either already have plans or are interested in developing, a maritime media delivery proposition.

Why is a Multicast Platform Required?
Our Solution

The Maritime Labour Convention 2006 calls for ship operators to provide regular access to recreational services for crew members including access to visual and audible media. The recommendations have been accepted by most governments around the world.
Through the deployment of satellite broadband networks in the maritime industry, access to the internet on board ship appears to have improved significantly but satellite bandwidth is expensive and the available bandwidth is managed to minimise the use of applications that can cause the networks to slow down such as large file downloads, access to online video websites or the use of internet phone and video services. The result is that crew expectations for access to content are not being met and industry surveys reveal that the majority of crew have hardly noticed any improvements over recent years. History also shows that crew members will always try and overcome the technical constraints applied by the network service providers and the network service providers will always try to close any loopholes that are identified.
The need for a media proposition is evident from the fact that there is high demand for media content from crew at sea and that this demand is not being fulfilled simply by the roll-out of broadband services to the vessels.
Multicast is the most efficient means to provide media to the large population of vessels that are equipped with satellite broadband services as it consumes less bandwidth than standard “browse and download” processes.
