MEDIA GATEWAY – THE SHIP’S GATEWAY TO RICH CONTENT

There are two models of the Media Gateway now available:

Independent
Over The Top

The Independent model has been developed to support SatstreamNet in Independent Mode. That is, when SatstreamNet operates via dedicated satellite channels independent of any existing broadband network on the vessel. In this mode, the Media Gateway connects to the Satellite Receiver Equipment via Ethernet cable.

In comparison, the Over The Top model has been developed to support SatstreamNet in an Over-The-Top configuration. That is, when SatstreamNet is integrated with the existing broadband network on the ship. In this mode, there is no need for the additional Satellite Receiver Equipment as SatstreamNet utilises the same satellite channels as the broadband network on board. An Over The Top configuration showing the Media Gateway is shown in the figure opposite.

Over The Top Configuration

Satellite media channels are integrated with the broadband data channels. An Over the Top media network uses the same satellite modem as the on-board broadband data network. Vessel roaming is handled by the broadband data network.

Media Gateway Functionality

The Media Gateway is a combined multicast data receiver; secure media storage server ; media player and multicast relay server.
It interfaces to the vessel’s IP network via Ethernet cable; to a standard definition TV set, via standard A/V Composite or S-Video cables and to a Wi-Fi access point via Ethernet cable.
The Media Gateway is controlled using a hand held remote control and navigation through the menu options is observed via the TV set.
It supports the playout of live TV and/or radio channels (encrypted and unencrypted), broadcast from SatstreamNet as well as the reception and storage management of pre-recorded media files, transmitted to the vessel by SatstreamNet.
For large screen viewing, the selected media can be played via the TV set. Media can also be played on BYOD’s such as laptops, tablets and smartphones equipped with suitable multicast enabled media players via the Wi-Fi network .
The Over The Top model can be configured to disable reception of live media streams when the vessel enters national waters. This may be a requirement of certain content providers.
