SatstreamNet is the world’s first Multicast-IP Content
Delivery Network developed specifically for the maritime industry. It will revolutionise
the way crew at sea receive media content.
For decades, crew at sea have relied upon slow communication links back to shore,
to keep up to date on what is happening in the world. As more vessels deploy VSAT
broadband technology, the increase in link speed has been more than matched by an
increase in demand for more content. Even with an “all you can eat” data package,
the demand for content has put a strain on the essential ship to shore links and
so typically, network service providers apply policies to avoid the network grinding
to a halt. A solution is needed. That solution is SatstreamNet.
SatstreamNet uses the on-board VSAT or TVRO antenna
to receive the media streams from the satellite. The network operates using IP multicast
in a receive-only configuration and can be configured to operate independently of
the operational broadband network or it can be integrated into the broadband network,
thereby providing Over-The-Top (OTT) media services.
SatstreamNet can deliver live video and audio streams
as well as file-based content to a Media Gateway installed on the ship. The Media
Gateway acts as the multicast IP receiver, secure local file store and media player
for playout of live and pre-stored media.
